Shallow groundwater nitrogen responses to different land use managements in the riparian zone of Yuqiao Reservoir in North China

Abstract: This field study investigated the nitrogen concentrations in the shallow groundwater from an ephemeral stream and four land uses: cropland, two-year restored (2yr) and five-years restored (5yr) woodlands, fishponds, and the nitrogen flux in the riparian zone of Yuqiao Reservoir. The groundwater nitrate-N concentrations in cropland were the highest among the four land uses. Total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and nitrate-N concentrations in the 2yr woodland were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than in 5yr woodland. … Show more

“…In the northeastern parts, the main contaminants are nitrogen, volatile phenols, and petroleum pollutants, which are often released by heavy industry and oil exploration282930. In Northern China, the main contaminants exceeding the standards are N, Fe, Mn, and petroleum pollutants3132333435, whereas pollutants in northwestern China are dominated by N, Cr, and Pb3637. The groundwater is generally high-quality in the southwestern parts, but is sometimes excessively contaminated by Fe, Mn, and volatile phenols3839.…”

“…It is essential for water contamination control measures to identify the element and source of water pollution sources here, especially regarding the control of pollution from nitrate and other nutrients. Previous studies on the Yuqiao Reservoir mainly focused on the composition of nitrogen in the shallow ground water, the analysis of the water quality status in 1990-2004, diffuse pollution, the source and migration factor of non-point source phosphorus, and forecasting water quality conditions in the future using a BP neural network (Zhang et al, 2003;Wang et al, 2004;Zhao et al, 2007;Lu and Yin, 2008;Xu et al, 2015). To sum up, the apportionment of pollution sources in a specific set of pollutants or simply assessing the condition in a set of pollutants was conducted in previous studies in the gathering area.…”

“…Therefore, it is extremely important to explore the source, migration, and transformation of pollutants in the Yuqiao Reservoir and analyze their influencing factors, which should be considered in the future for the prevention and remediation of pollutants [ 36 ]. At present, the research on the water quality of the Yuqiao Reservoir has mainly involved the estimation of reservoir water source, nutrient load through models [ 37 , 38 ], land use types [ 39 ], endogenous sediments on the water quality of the reservoir [ 40 , 41 ], and diversion structure and phytoplankton on the water quality of the reservoir [ 5 , 42 ]. There is still a lack of research on the mechanism between rainfall change and water quality against the background of climate change.…”
