Shading Effect on Outdoor Thermal Comfort in High-Density City a Case Based Study of Beijing

Abstract: Shading provided by buildings affects outdoor thermal environments and, therefore, influences the long-term thermal comfort of people in outdoor spaces. This study conducted several field experiments to analyze the outdoor thermal conditions on urban streets in central business district (CBD) of Beijing. The RayMan model was utilized for calculating Sky view factor (SVF) and outdoor thermal comfort using meteorological data of one year period. Analytical results indicate that slightly shaded areas (SVF > 0.… Show more

“…Considerable attention should be given to user perception and factors that affect urban greenway use in developing countries. Considering the different developmental level and enormous cultural differences between Eastern and Western societies, research results for Western countries are not automatically valid for Eastern countries [ 26 ]. In addition, although individual and environmental factors that affect greenway use have been deeply discussed in previous studies, using pattern factors, such as the mode of transportation to the greenway and activities on the greenway, that may affect the frequency and duration of greenway use is still understudied [ 10 ].…”

“…Although Western researchers have provided abundant articles on the use of open spaces, the city structures and characteristics of Western cities are different from those in China. Considering the enormous cultural differences between Eastern and Western societies, research results and recommendations for Western cities are not automatically valid for cities in China [ 29 , 30 ]. Not many studies have investigated the use of public open spaces in China and other Eastern countries.…”
