Sexual Partner Characteristics, Serodiscordant/Serostatus Unknown Unprotected Anal Intercourse and Disclosure Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected and Uninfected Black Men Who Have Sex With Men in New York City

Abstract: A significant proportion of black MSM in this study did not disclose their HIV status. Our data highlight the need for more data on dyadic variables and sexual risk behaviors among black MSM, as well as interventions to encourage communication between partners.

“…In a subgroup model including HIV-negative respondents ( k =8),12 14 36–44 47 we identified marginally significant odds elevation for UAI in internet-initiated encounters (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.29). Although we identified a significant association by leaving out either the MINTS II12 42 43 or NHBS II studies,40 re-estimated ORs were stable, differing from the original estimate by less than 5%.…”

“…Eight studies12 14 36–39 41–43 47 48 providing data on UAI with serodiscordant or unknown-status partners indicated null effects for OPS (OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.23). This was consistent in HIV-negative and HIV-positive subgroup models from the same studies (OR HIV− 0.97, 95% CI 0.77 to 1.22; OR HIV+ 1.13, 95% CI 0.70 to 1.82).…”

“…Implicit in MI, as in most psychosocial models of behavior change, is the assumption that risk behaviors are largely under the control of the individual (Fisher & Fisher, 2000), and the intervention therefore risks failing to address the full range of factors that influences MSM's sexual behaviors, such as the strong interpersonal and social forces (see, e.g., Berg, 2008;Muñoz-Laboy & Dodge, 2007;Tieu et al, 2011). Among the three included studies in this systematic review that assessed the effectiveness of MI on both AOD use and sexual risk behaviors, two found an effect for AOD use but not sexual risk behaviors (Morgenstern et al, 2007;Velasquez et al, 2009), and the third found no effect for either outcome type (Morgenstern et al, 2009).…”

“…According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2010a), sexual risks including unprotected sex and STIs account for most HIV infections in MSM, who make up 53% of all new HIV infections in the U.S. in recent years. Also within the European Union/ European Economic Area, MSM represent the population most severely affected by HIV, with the predominant mode of HIV transmission being sex among MSM (van de Laar & Likatavicius, 2009).…”

“…Several studies indicate that a large proportion of HIV+ MSM continued having risky sex even after HIV diagnosis (Crepaz et al, 2009; Gorbach et al, 2011; Tieu et al, 2011). In a recent study of 154 HIV+ Thai MSM, 32% reported unprotected anal sex in past 3 months and 41% were tested positive for STI (Sirivongrangson et al, 2012).…”
