Sexual dimorphism of sternum using computed tomography – volume rendering technique images of Western Chinese

Abstract: Previous studies have revealed that the sternum can provide a method for assessing sex in diverse population groups. In the current study, sternal measurements were recorded from three-dimensional multidetector-computed tomographic images of 255 individuals (112 females and 143 males) in Western China. Results demonstrated that the difference between male and female mean values for all linear dimensions and manubrium index was highly significant. The stepwise analysis of four linear sterna dimensions and manub… Show more

“…In these situations, sex assessment based on individual bones becomes a valuable method. In addition to the skull and pelvis, the other bones examined for sexual differences are the long bones of the limbs [3], ribs [4,5], scapula [6,7], clavicle [8,9], sternum [10,11], vertebrae [12,13], sacrum and coccyx [14,15], bones of the hands and feet [16,17] or the hyoid bone [18,19].…”
