Sexual and Socioeconomic Factors Affecting the Risk of Past Infections With Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2

Abstract: Between November 1978 and May 1980, a cross-sectional survey of 566 females and 391 males, aged 35 to 50 years, living in metropolitan Toronto, was conducted to examine the influence of socioeconomic status and sexual behavior on the occurrence of antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 2. “…In Canada, the age-adjusted seroprevalence of HSV-2 was determined to be 17.3% (17) among pregnant women in the general population. In Canada, HSV-2 antibody prevalence was 17.5 to 24% in women and 12.8% in men (14,21) in two large urban centers, and the prevalence was 18.8% in sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic attendees in two cities (A. “…A população estudada caracterizou-se por apresentar baixo poder aquisitivo, sendo epidemiologicamente mais predisposta à infecção pelos HSV-2 26 . Em 1993, Weinberg et al 4 avaliaram a freqüência de soropositividade contra os HSV em parturientes de São Paulo.…”

“…Other studies have also reported that early age at first intercourse and many partners carried an increased risk of HSV-2 seropositivity. 1,5,[12][13][14] A study conducted on black women of lower social class with breast cancer found risk ratios of 2.4 and 3.3 for seropositivity for early age at first intercourse and multiple partners, respectively. 5 However, these relationships between sexual behavior and HSV-2 seropositivity have not been found consistently in all studies of lower social class females.…”
