Catches of oriental fruit moth males, Grapholitha molesta (Busck), at traps baited with (Z)‐8‐dodecenyl acetate were not greatly influenced by design. Males were equally attracted to polyethylene dispensers containing 1–1000μg of the pheromone. There was no evidence that small amounts of the E isomer produced significant increases in catch at pheromone sources, but reductions were apparent when the level of this isomer exceeded 23%. Synergistic effects resulted from the addition of (Z‐8‐dodecenyl alcohol to the pheromone, and captures were also enhanced when dodecyl alcohol was used as a modifier. Traps at 2m caught more males than those located at 1m or 4m and this pattern was not altered by tree height. There was evidence that traps cleared daily caught fewer moths than those serviced at longer intervals. RÉSUMÉ INFLUENCE DE QUELQUES FACTEURS SUR LA PERFORMANCE DE PIEGES A PHEROMONE POUR GRAPHOLITHA MOLESTA (TORDEUSE ORIENTALE DES FRUITS) EN AUSTRALIE Les captures de mǎles de la Tordeuse orientale des fruits (Grapholitha molesta) par des pièges attractifs à base de (Z)‐8‐dodecenyl acetate sont peu influencées par le type de dispositif. Les mǎles sont également attirés par des containers‐évaporateurs contenant 1–1000μg de phéromones. De petites quantités de l'isomère E n'entrainent pas d'augmentation significative des captures, mais si la teneur en cet isomère excède 23%, alors on observe des réductions des captures. L'addition de (Z)‐8‐dodecenyl alcool à la phéromone a des effets synergiques; les captures étant aussi augmentées quand de l'alcool dodecylique est utilisé comme élément de modification de l'attractif. Les pièges placés à 2 m de hauteur attrapent plus de mǎles que ceux installés à 1 m ou à 4 m et cela s'observe quelle que soit la hauteur de l'arbre. On remarque que les pièges nettoyés chaque jour capturent moins de papillons que ceux révisés à de plus longs intervalles.

S U M M A R YSeveral factors influencing the efficiency of water-traps in capturing cabbage root flies were studied at Wellesbourne in 1971 and 1972. In both the laboratory and field, approximately twice as many flies were caught in fluorescent as in non-fluorescent yellow traps. Depending upon trap density, addition of a source of the attractant allylisothiocyanate (ANCS) increased the numbers of females captured by approximately twofold in fluorescent traps and from two-to sevenfold in non-fluorescent traps. Traps were equally efficient irrespective of whether the ANCS was renewed every 2, 3, 4 or 5 days. On the first day of trapping, the number of flies caught per unit area was linearly related to the square root of the number of traps in that area. On the following days the rate was probably in equilibrium with the combined effect of immigration and the rate of development of responsive flies in the trapping zone. Most males were caught 30cm above the soil surface and most females at soil level. Traps 120 cm above the soil surface caught few flies.Populations of marked flies were released into large field cages containing both a section of hedgerow and a plot of cauliflowers. Even after a week, only 81 yo of the males and 55 yo of the females had been recaptured from the most responsive of these captive populations. Furthermore, only 30 % of females were recaptured when they were more than 8 days old, the age at which most probably enter the new host-crop.

The influence of dodecyl acetate on the response of male Grapholitha molesta to pheromone sources was observed under field conditions. Males were not trapped at live virgin female or synthetic pheromone sources when dodecyl acetate was present in the same trap or within 15 cm of the bait. Capture rate was still reduced at 30 cm separation but not at 60 cm. When dodecyl acetate was present as a background odour over a large area, catches of males at pheromone traps increased significantly. Reasons for these results remain obscure but the findings show that care is needed in the evaluation for possible control purposes of compounds which modify male sexual activity. Résumé PROBLÈMES RENCONTRÉS POUR DÉFINIR LES SUBSTANCES SYNERGISTES OU INHIBITRICES DE LA RÉPONSE DE GRAPHOLITHA MOLESTA (ORIENTAL FRUIT MOTH) À SA PHÉROMONE SEXUELLE L'influence du dodecyl acetate sur la réponse du mâle de Grapholitha molesta a éTÉ étudiée dans des conditions naturelles. Des pièges attractifs, appâTÉs avec une femelle vierge ou avec sa phéromone de synthèse, ne capturent aucun mâle quand du dodecyl acetate est placé simultanément dans ces pièges ou à une distance de 15 cms de ceux‐ci. Quand ce produit est placé à 30 cms du piège on observe encore une réduction du taux de capture, mais l'influence est nulle pour une distance de 60 cms. Quand du dodecyl acetate est utilisé sur une très grande surface, comme odeur de fond, les captures de mâles dans les pièges à phéromone augmentent de faĉon significative. Ces résultats sont difficiles à expliquer, mais ils montrent que l'on doit prendre beaucoup de précautions avant d'évaluer, en vue d'applications éventuelles, l'inTÉrêt à utiliser des composés qui modifient l'activiTÉ sexuelle des mâles.
