Sex of Mussel Mytilus coruscus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) : Sequential Hermaphroditism

Abstract: Samples were collected from the subtidal region of Jumunjin on the eastern coast of Korea in July 2020. A total of 338 mussels of shell height (SH) 20.8–149.8 mm were used for sex ratio analysis. The sex ratio (F:M) in the same population of mussel Mytilus coruscus was approximately 1:0.7. The sex ratio according to the class of SH was different. The sex reversal pattern of M. coruscus appears to go from male → female → male → female, and as such is determined to b… Show more

“…Bivalves with asynchronous hermaphroditism undergo sex reversal after spawning [21,22]. Differences in the sex ratios of bivalve populations according to size and age can provide indirect evidence of sex reversal, as has been confirmed in Mercenaria mercenaria [21], Ruditapes philippinarum [23], Tegillarca granosa [24], and Mytilus coruscus [25].…”

“…H. schlegelii has been reported to be a hermaphroditic species ( Wu et al, 2017 ), its gonads are clearly visible at 12 month-old so that male and female can be divided; the gonadal tissue of H. schlegelii gradually grows steadily at 12–24 months of age, and the connective tissue is relatively abundant; Hermaphroditism was found at 28-34-month-old. In recent years, bivalves such as Crassostrea gigas ( Broquard et al, 2021 ), Tridacna squamosa ( Li et al, 2020 ), Sinonovacula constricta ( Yao et al, 2021 ), Nodipecten subnodosus ( Galindo-Torres et al, 2018 ), Mytilus coruscus ( Kim et al, 2021 ), Argopecten irradians ( Zhang et al, 2021 ) were reported to have the phenomenon of hermaphrodite. But the molecular mechanism of hermaphroditism in bivalve has rarely been studied, especially in freshwater mussel.…”
