Background
Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) has been found to be related to malignant tumors; the aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between MMP2 expression in lung cancer tissues and clinical parameters of lung cancer.
Methods
The expression of MMP2 in lung cancer tissues and in adjacent non-malignant tissues was tested by immunohistochemistry. The correlation between the expression of MMP2 and clinical parameters of lung cancer was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curve and multiple regression analysis.
Results
The expression of MMP2 was higher in lung cancer tissues than that in adjacent non-malignant tissues (p = 0.002). Increased MMP2 was associated with low differentiation (p = 0.022), tumor size (p = 0.032), lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001), advanced stage (p = 0.002). The post-surgical survival time in patients with high MMP2 expression was shorter than that in patients with low MMP2 expression (p = 0.001). High expression of MMP2 (p = 0.006) and advanced stage (p = 0.003) were independent prognostic indicators for survival of lung cancer patients.
Conclusions
Increased MMP2 correlates with malignant biological behavior of lung cancer and it could be a potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.
Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) has been found to be related to tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression pattern and clinical significance of HSP27 in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The expression of HSP27 in tissues was examined by immunohistochemistry and serum level of HSP27 mRNA was detected by real-time PCR. The survival analysis was performed by a Kaplan Meier method and the estimation of risk factors was determined by the multiple regression analysis. The expression of HSP27 was increased in lung cancer tissues (p < 0.001) and serum (p < 0.001) of NSCLC patients and higher HSP27 in lung cancer tissues and serum of NSCLC patients was associated with poorly differentiated cancer (p < 0.001; p = 0.035), lymphatic metastasis (p < 0.001; p < 0.001), advanced TNM stage (p < 0.001; p < 0.001). And the levels of HSP27 in tissues and serum of lung cancer patients had a certain positive correlation (p = 0.046). Moreover, increased HSP27 expression correlated with shorter survival of NSCLC patients (p < 0.001). The results suggest that HSP27 may serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of NSCLC.
The Betta fish displays a remarkable variety of phenotypes selected during domestication. However, the genetic basis underlying these traits remain largely unexplored. Here, we report a high-quality genome assembly and re-sequencing of 727 individuals representing diverse morphologies of the betta fish. We show that current breeds have a complex domestication history with extensive introgression with wild species. Using GWAS, we identify the genetic basis of multiple traits, including several coloration phenotypes, sex-determination which we map to DMRT1, and the long-fin phenotype which maps to KCNJ15. We identify a polygenic signal related to aggression with many similarities to human psychiatric traits, involving genes such as CACNB2 and DISC1. Our study provides a resource for developing the Betta fish as a genetic model for morphology and behavior in vertebrates.
