Sex differences in visual performance and postural sway precede sex differences in visually induced motion sickness

Abstract: Motion sickness is more common among women than among men. Previous research has shown that standing body sway differs between women and men. In addition, research has shown that postural sway differs between individuals who experience visually induced motion sickness and those who do not and that those differences exist before exposure to visual motion stimuli. We asked whether sex differences in postural sway would be related to sex differences in the incidence of visually induced motion sickness. We measure… Show more

“…Age and gender also seem to be important: Arns and Cerney (2005) found that symptom severity and incidence increased with age, and a number of studies report that females are more susceptible to cybersickness than males (Stanney et al 1999;Stanney et al 2003;Flanagan et al 2005;Kim et al 2008;. The reason for this gender difference is somewhat unclear, and might be driven by the influence of the menstrual cycle (Clemes and Howarth 2005;however, Golding et al 2005 argue that the influence of the menstrual cycle is too small to fully account for the gender difference), differences in postural stability between men and women (Koslucher et al 2016), or a larger field of view in women (LaViola 2000).…”
