Changes in the Determinants of Marriage Entry in Post-Reform Urban China

Using national survey data and measures of housing prices, we examine the effects of demographic and socioeconomic determinants of entry into marriage in urban China spanning the past six decades. Our study yields three significant findings. First, the importance of economic prospects has significantly increased during the economic reform era. Second, the positive effect of working in the state-owned sector has substantially weakened. Third, for the most recent period after the housing reform in urban China, the effects of education vary with local housing prices. Specifically, a higher level of education is associated with early entry into marriage when housing prices are relatively high but with late entry into marriage when housing prices are relatively low. Taken together, these results suggest that the determinants of marriage in China should be understood within a broader context of institutional changes.

Analizuojant ekonominius, socialinius ir kultūrinius veiksnius, kurie riboja / veikia žmonių galimybes patenkinti naujos partnerystės poreikį, straipsnyje yra apibendrinamos mokslinėje literatūroje minimos partnerystės atkūrimo teorinės hipotezės (poreikių, patrauklumo, galimybių)Išsiskyręs visuomenės narys nėra tas, kuris negalėtų užmegzti partnerystės ryšių sukurdamas naują šeimą, nesvarbu, ar santuokos, ar kohabitacijos būdu. Analizuoti atvejus, kodėl ir kaip užmezgamos pakartotinės partnerystės, yra svarbu, nes tiriant pirmą kartą kuriamas šeimas dažniausiai kyla klausimas dėl partnerystės užmezgimo laiko. Stebint pakartotines partnerystes, pagrindinis tyrimo klausimas yra "ar bus užmegzta nauja partnerystė?", ypač jei išsiskiria vyresnio amžiaus sutuoktiniai (De Graaf, Kalmijn 2003).

OBJECTIVEWe examine differences across Europe in attitudes towards divorce involving children under the age of 12. We hypothesize that these attitudes are less favourable in countries where poverty among single parent households is common than in countries where such poverty is rare. We also expect that divorce involving young children is more accepted in countries where enrolment in child care is high. METHODSOur sample consists of 37,975 individuals from 22 countries, obtained from the European Social Survey (2006). We conduct multilevel regression analyses including individual-level and country-level variables. RESULTSFindings confirm our main hypotheses: the lower the poverty rate among single parents and the higher enrolment in childcare, the lower the disapproval of divorce when young children are involved. These findings remain when taking into account the crude divorce rate and secularisation at the country level, and when controlling for differences in the composition of populations with regard to individual characteristics that are associated with divorce attitudes. Additionally, cross-level interactions indicate that poverty among single parents has the strongest impact on mothers' divorce attitudes. CONCLUSIONSDivorce attitudes appear to be related to people's assessment of the consequences of divorce for the children involved.
