Sex Determination in Male and Female Melopsittacus undulates using a Morphometric Method

Abstract: Parakeets (Melopsittacus undulates) are classified parrot order Psittaciformes. Parakeets are monomorphic birds whose sex is difficult to be distinguished. Sex identification is very important for breeding efforts in order to increase the parakeet population. External morphology was determined to identify the sex of the birds. This research was conducted to determine the sex of parakeets (male and female). This study used five male and five female parakeets aged 4 months as the study objects. This study used t… Show more

“…No literature available regarding to tarso-metatarsus of rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri ). Mean values of tarso-metatarsus of male budgies was 3.52+-0.28 while mean values of tarso-metatarsus of female was 3.42+-0.42 in previous literature (Baehaqi et al , 2018). The difference in values was due to the species difference and variation in body weight and size.…”

“…No literature could be available related to male and female body length of rose-ringed parakeet with respect to gender, age and breeding season. Previous literature described the mean body length of rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri ) was about 38.1(cm) in (Butler and Gosler, 2004), in male budgies was 17.32(cm) and for female budgies was 16.86 (cm) in previous studies (Baehaqi et al , 2018). The difference in body length of different parrots was due to the species difference and variation in body weight and size.…”

“…In Melopsittacus undulates, the results of the t-test revealed no significant differences between males and females, but the differences between genders were only on the phenotypic characters. (Ibnu Baehaqi et al, 2018). The study on the White-crested Elaenia showed a significant difference between males and females for the characters wing length (WL) and tail length (TL), where the males shown a size more important than females.…”

“…Bird sexing can be difficult, especially among monomorphic species (Doosti et al, 2009;Baehaqi et al, 2018). The morphology of males and females are very similar among the species (Cardoso et al, 2012;Abdollahi et al, 2018).…”
