Severity of Anemia among Children under 36 Months Old in Rural Western China

Abstract: ObjectiveTo describe severity of anemia and explore its determinants among children under 36 months old in rural western China.Study DesignThe family information of 6711 children was collected and their hemoglobin was measured in 2005. A generalized estimated equation (GEE) linear model was used to identify the determinants of severity of childhood anemia.ResultsThe prevalence of mild, moderate and severe anemia among these children was 27.4%, 21.9% and 3.2% respectively. GEE model analysis showed that provinc… Show more

“…9 In this study, 7.8 % of girls and 12.9% of the boys were severely affected, This is probably due to the higher growth rate among boys which increases the higher demand for iron, which cannot be supplied by the diet. 10 The age of child and mother's anemia level predicted childhood anemia, similar to the findings of some other studies conducted in Burma, Benin, and Mali. 11,12 Consumption of vegetables and fruits was associated with rates of anemia.…”

“…Thus, mothers might have problems in purchasing and providing good nutritious food for themselves as well as their children which might result in anemia due to inadequate intake of iron and other micronutrient-rich foods [ 36 ]. This is true because, within 12 months after birth, mothers and their children share a similar sociological environment, thus, their dietary patterns and quality of life may be similar [ 37 ]. Also, mothers and their children may share similar exposure to infections such as helminthiasis, malaria and other infectious diseases that may interfere with their red blood cells production and iron stores [ 38 ].…”

“…This finding of the burden of moderate-to-severe anaemia is similar to China (25%). 13 Childhood is the period when there is a high demand of iron for rapid growth but about half of the children are malnourished in Nepal. The higher prevalence of anaemia could lead to a higher burden of cognitive impairment, and increase susceptibility to infections.…”

“…Similar findings have been reported from Timor-Leste, 14 Burma 17 and China. 13 There are three major reasons, which may explain such an association. First, mother and children usually have the same or similar food source and the same socio-economic condition.…”
