Severe occupational hand eczema, job stress and cumulative sickness absence

Abstract: Chronic stress is an additional factor predicting cumulative sickness absence among severely affected OHE patients. Other relevant factors for this study sample included the 'cognitive weariness' subscale of the Shirom Melamed Burnout Measure and the physical component summary score of the SF-36, a measure of health-related life quality. Prevention and rehabilitation should take job stress into consideration in multidisciplinary treatment strategies for severely affected OHE patients.

“…When we analysed sex differences between patients (not shown in Table ), the only significant result was for the EQ‐5D anxiety/depression subscale ( P < .001). These findings and the associated sex bias are in agreement with the results of previous studies . Although this sex difference has been found in previous studies, we feel that it has not been sufficiently discussed in the literature.…”

“…These findings and the associated sex bias are in agreement with the results of previous studies. 11,[31][32][33] Although this sex difference has been found in previous studies, we feel that it has not been sufficiently discussed in the literature. It can be argued that the design of the QoL questionnaires only partially allows the detection of sex differences in behavioural and exposure patterns and the higher degree of emotional distress and discomfort reported by women.…”

“…Despite the fact that hand eczema is frequently caused or aggravated by occupational exposures, hand eczema‐related presenteeism has hitherto not received much attention. Although a review from 2010 showed a significant impact of occupational contact dermatitis on work activities, to date only 1 study among patients with hand eczema has addressed presenteeism.…”

“…Considering previous results showing that not only severity influences prognosis (assessed as sickness absence and health‐related quality of life) but that factors such as personal resources (stress and burnout) are also important, it is interesting that this education intervention had no effect on these outcomes (self‐evaluated work ability, stress, and self‐evaluated health). It is evident that not only knowledge is necessary for hand eczema patients to master their disease.…”

“…In a retrospective cross‐sectional exploratory study from Germany, occupational hand eczema‐related sickness absence was reported to be associated with stress, but not with disease severity. An observational European multicentre cross‐sectional study found a stronger association between hand eczema and both depression and anxiety than in healthy controls. It has been suggested that the general ability of patients to self‐manage is an important factor for successfully self‐managing the disease.…”
