Severe Diffuse Systemic Amyloidosis with Involvement of the Pharynx, Larynx, and Trachea: CT and MR Findings

Abstract: SUMMARY:Amyloidosis is a term applied to a diverse group of disorders that share the deposition of amyloid protein in various extracellular tissues. Systemic amyloidosis may involve almost any organ system in the body including regions in the head and neck; however, pharyngeal involvement is rare, with only 12 cases having been previously reported. Ten of these cases were localized disease, and only 2 cases were systemic amyloidosis. We present the case of a patient with severe diffuse systemic amyloidosis wit… Show more

“…Chemotherapy using a melphalan plus prednisone combination is commonly used in systemic amyloidosis but has an efficacy level of 40-60 % [13]. Unlike systemic amyloidosis, a primary solitary amyloidosis diagnosis usually implicates a better prognosis, although long-term follow-up data are unavailable for the majority of the cases reported in the literature.…”

“…19 Tracheobronchial amyloidosis may cause tracheal stenosis or postobstructive atelectasis. 20 Nodular amyloidosis is associated with peripheral subpleural nodular densities of variable size (0.5 mm to 5 cm) with sharp, lobulated margins and calcifi cations. 21 , 22 Th ese nodules are generally localized to the lower lobes.…”

“…Первичный амилоидоз дыхательных путей -ред-ко встречаемая патология. Диффузное отложение амилоида чаще наблюдается в области вестибу-лярной складки (55%), желудочка гортани (36%), подсвязочного пространства (36%), голосовой связки (27%), черпаловидно-подгортанной склад-ки (23%) и передней комиссуры (14%) [16,17,18,19]. Несмотря на редкость, амилоидоз гортани следует считать важным заболеванием в диффе-ренциальном ряду поражений гортани.…”
