Intensity-modulated radiotherapy for localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis

Abstract: Primary solitary amyloidosis is a rare form of amyloidosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a nasopharyngeal amyloidosis case treated with excision and radiation leading to complete remission. Because of the difficulty for surgeons to achieve radical resection with such lesions, radiotherapy proved to be an excellent adjuvant treatment in this case.

“…A positive effect of LD-RT on amyloid load was previously reported in patients presenting peripheral amyloidosis [30][31][32][33][34][35][36] and recently in three AD mouse models [15][16][17]. Nevertheless, this reduction of the number of amyloid plaques was not observed in our rat model.…”

“…Surgical debridement of the involved sinonasal compartments provides symptomatic benefits in most of the cases and in some cases can impart long recurrence free intervals, however, recurrence tends to occur in more than 50% of cases, which may necessitate revision surgery [3]. In cases of localized laryngeal, tracheobronchial and nasopharyngeal amyloidosis, radiotherapy has been used but the results have not been consistent and the appropriate dose to be delivered remains undefined [11]. The rarity of the condition and unpredictable course of the disease makes it difficult to frame a definitive treatment algorithm and symptomatic treatment with surgical debridement remains the realistic goal at present.…”

“…We confirm the effectiveness of radiotherapy, particularly in combination with surgical debulking, in selected cases. [17][18][19] However, in general we observed no differences in outcome according to different treatment regimens.…”
