Severe COVID-19 and Retina: Are There Any Retinal Manifestations?

Abstract: Purpose To investigate whether there are retinal lesions associated with severe COVID-19. Methods We studied 232 symptomatic subjects aged 18 – 65 years who had severe COVID-19 and had received treatment. The evaluations included ophthalmological examinations, optical coherence tomography (OCT), imaging modalities with near infrared reflectance (NIR), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and fundus photography (FP). Results The mean age of the patients was 49 years, and 67.6% of them were men. Th… Show more

“…However, we found no significant differences in any of these parameters. Gündoğan et al (22) also investigated the posterior segment involvement of the COVID-19 and concluded the same with our study. However, Pereira et al (23) reported cotton wool spots and flame-shaped hemorrhages on the retina of the COVID-19 patients.…”

“…In subsequent studies, different results were found at different rates [13 -15]. As a matter of fact, some studies have not found significant evidence of retinal lesions in COVID-19 patients [16,17]. Today, cases of COVID-19 are increasing all over the world and new mutations are added [18].…”
