Severe Clinical Presentation of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Naturally Infected Dogs with Disruption of the Splenic White Pulp

Abstract: In this work, we investigated the association between the disruption of splenic lymphoid tissue and the severity of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs. Clinical and laboratory data from 206 dogs were reviewed. Spleen sections collected during the euthanasia of these animals were analyzed, and the splenic lymphoid tissue samples were classified as well organized (spleen type 1), slightly disorganized (spleen type 2), or moderately to extensively disorganized (spleen type 3). Of 199 dogs with evidence of Leishmania … Show more

“…to transpose the immune response of the host is to inhibit the production of IL-12, as well as to prevent dendritic cells from presenting the t cell antigen satisfactorily (SRIVaStaVa et al, 2016). LIMa et al (2014) associated splenic morphological changes with severe clinical illness in dogs infected with L. infantum; however, our results showed mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic animals with moderate to extensive splenic tissue disorganization, and with a relatively high parasite load. this high load in MNC animals eliminates the possibility of considering dog clinical status as a criterion for parasite susceptibility.…”

“…Both the urban and wild cycles could remain connected, hampering the control of human disease if only the domestic reservoirs are culled down. Thus, the incrimination of putative wild reservoirs such as wild canids, rodents, bats, or marsupials, is necessary and such potential reservoirs must be studied (Chaves et al, 2007;Dantas-Torres, 2007;Sobrino et al, 2008;Souza et al, 2014).…”
