Settlement and growth of the mussels (Mytilusgalloprovincialis, Lamarck, 1819) on different collectors suspended from an offshore submerged longline system in the Black Sea

Abstract: A study of spat settlement of a submerged longline mussel culture system was carried out in Sinop area, Black Sea, between May 2008 and May 2009. The effects of six different types of collectors on spat settlement and growth were investigated. Six different types of spat settlement rope were used as polypropylene ropes with 18 mm diameter, 18 mm diameter timeworn silk rope, 22 mm diameter rope made from old hawser (OSR), 22 mm diameter ropes made from old anchovy net without pegs, 18 mm diameter old used nylon… Show more

“…These results are in accordance with the spawning and settlement of mitilids, since temperature is the key driver underpinning these processes (South et al, 2021). Spawning seasons are spring and summer, with a prolonged larval development up to 45 days (Karayücel et al, 2003;Barria et al, 2012;Çelik et al, 2016).…”

“…During this study, mussel settlement has been detected on PP rope collectors with a diameter of 18 mm with a filament structure, just as in the study of Çelik et al. (2015). Unlike the study of Çelik et al.…”

“…Ropes made of polypropylene (Çelik et al., 2015; Filgueira et al., 2007; Karayücel et al., 2003; Sahin et al, 2011) and jute (Fuentes & Molares, 1994; Lök et al., 2018; Yıldız et al, 2013) are frequently preferred in mussel cultivation. During this study, mussel settlement has been detected on PP rope collectors with a diameter of 18 mm with a filament structure, just as in the study of Çelik et al.…”

“…Despite the stress caused by translocation, mussels from cultivation areas in Istria maintained market size (meat content: 4−5 g and shell size 50−60 mm) (KHAN et al, 2006) by July at experimental station with no further difference in biometrical parameters. Important factors in growth rate are particulate organic matter (TROOST et al, 2010) and local factors that determine nutritional conditions can greatly influence the growth rate of marine bivalves (YILDIZ et al, 2006;PEHARDA et al, 2007;ÇELIK et al, 2015). An increase in seawater temperature over the spring to summer season, followed by a decrease in salinity corresponds with the increase of plankton biomass and nutrient enrichment by freshwater influx in Lim Bay experimental station (HAMER et al, 2010).…”
