PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate and explain pathways through which mobile money can improve financial inclusion.Design/methodology/approachThe study used 294 survey responses from mobile money users in Ghana. The data were analysed using fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).FindingsThe findings reveal four pathways for improving financial inclusion through mobile money. In addition, the study identified three distinct user topologies as well as their associated pathways through which mobile money can be used to improve financial inclusion.Practical implicationsManagers and financial service organisations need to design products and services to align with different pathways and user topologies to improve financial inclusion through mobile money. Moreover, they need to take into account people’s diverse social and economic backgrounds.Originality/valueThe study makes theoretical and empirical contributions by unpacking pathways through which mobile money can improve financial inclusion. In addition, this study reveals three distinct user topologies, being ease-of-use, behavioural intention and coverage-price-service driven and associated pathways through which mobile money can improve financial inclusion. These pathways and user topologies are important to tailor mobile money services and financial inclusion policies. Lastly, this study is arguably the first to utilise the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) in fsQCA to extend the mobile money literature.

Explaining Variation in Oil Sands Pipeline Projects

While the vast majority of oil pipeline projects in Canada have been successfully built, several mega oil sands projects within and passing through Canada have been cancelled or significantly delayed. This article explains why these delays and cancellations have occurred. A systematic cross-case analysis is used to provide insight into the changing politics of oil sands pipelines. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is used to identify combinations of causal conditions that co-occur across cases of proposed new oil pipelines and pipeline expansion projects. The pipeline projects were proposed to the federal regulator—the National Energy Board—between 2006 and 2014. The QCA reveals that social mobilization and major regulatory barrier(s) are necessary conditions in explaining variation in pipeline project outcomes. The analysis of sufficiency reveals more complex configurations of conditions. This article contributes to the literature on the politics of oil sands pipelines by using a comparative approach to identify the impacts of socio-political and legal dynamics that have emerged around pipelines in the last 15 years.

Politics without bureaucrats? Western European NGO campaigns in the state and the market

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play an important role in the representation of citizens' interests towards policymakers. However, they increasingly run their campaigns not only against policymakers, but also against corporations. While the choice among strategies has been examined either in the state (targeting policymakers) or in the market (targeting companies), the choice between the two remains unexamined. Moreover, conventional studies of advocacy have failed to comparatively assess how groups combine strategies. This study fills these gaps, examining when NGOs target their campaigns at (a) the market, (b) the state and (c) both. It examines 24 NGO campaigns in the UK and Italy using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. Three main findings emerge. First, structural factors – especially the openness of the market – are most important in determining which target an NGO chooses. Second, campaigns that combine strategies tend to be either market- or state-oriented. Finally, high resources are the factor that pushes NGOs to combine strategies across the market and the state.
