Servo-Integrated Patterned Media by Hybrid Directed Self-Assembly

Abstract: A hybrid directed self-assembly approach is developed to fabricate unprecedented servo-integrated bit-patterned media templates, by combining sphere-forming block copolymers with 5 teradot/in.(2) resolution capability, nanoimprint and optical lithography with overlay control. Nanoimprint generates prepatterns with different dimensions in the data field and servo field, respectively, and optical lithography controls the selective self-assembly process in either field. Two distinct directed self-assembly techniq… Show more

“…There has been an increasing interest in preparing block copolymers (BCPs) thin films having lamellar microdomains oriented normal to the surface where the repeat period is small so as to achieve high areal densities . Such materials would find broad application as templates for the fabrication of ultrahigh areal density nanowires, bit‐patterned media (BPM), and graphene nanotransistors . To obtain ultrasmall repeat periods, a large Flory–Huggins segmental interaction parameter ( χ ) is necessary to maintain a microphase separated morphology at low molecular weights.…”

“…(10) These effective jitters are dominated by the magnetic switching field distribution component of Eq. (9). We estimate that the effective write field gradients are 300 Oe/nm downtrack and 150 Oe/nm cross-track and the island switching field distribution is measured to be 540 Oe.…”

“…While critical feasibility milestones were demonstrated such as integration with aperiodic servo patterns 29 and magnetic recording demonstrations 19,30 at densities ranging from 1-2 Tdot/in 2 (Figure 1d-e), other challenges loomed large for BPM technology. Ultimately, the lithographic difficulties to fabricate skinnier, longer bit cells with higher aspect ratios 19 to boost drive performance, integration challenges, cost pressures, a shifting market landscape, and the advent of other technologies such as three-dimensional flash and heatassisted magnetic recording 31 all contributed to deprioritization of BPM.…”
