Serum α-1-acid glycoprotein as an index of dissemination in breast cancer

Abstract: Assay of the serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (SAGP) produced by the liver in response to many disease states is shown to reflect prognosis and monitor progress in patients with early, recurrent and disseminated breast cancer. Eighteen of 26 patients with localized breast cancer and positive bone scans had elevated SAGP when first seen, but within 5 months of treatment 5 further patients with positive bone scans developed an elevated SAGP. Furthermore, an initially abnormal SAGP level became normal within 5 mon… Show more

“…Roberts and colleagues reported that 18 out of 24 (62%) patients with metastatic disease had an elevated serum ORO value (>0.88 g/l) at diagnosis of systemic disease [29]. However, the lack of specificity of orosomucoid even in advanced breast cancer was shown by the fact that the mean serum ORO concentration of patients with Crohns disease was higher than the mean value of patients with disseminated breast cancer.…”

“…Further, the levels of these proteins have correlated closely with the spread of disease [12,19,21]. These findings have led us to raise the question as to how these glycoproteins might affect the responses of immunologically competent cells.…”

“…However, changes in serum levels which tollow a distinct pattern as detected by serial measurements in a single patient might reflect tumour growth. This approach was recently advocated in the literature and promising results in some patients with colorectal cancer [13,14], breast cancer [15] and neuroblastoma [16] have been claimed. In the present investigation three APR (cq-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin and C-reactive protein) and three CC (C4, C3-proactivator, and C9) have been determined in a longitudinal fashion in 20 patients with invasive cervical carcinoma.…”
