Aim To investigate the link between serum vaspin levels and physical activity and/or physical fitness in Japanese. Methods A total of 156 subjects (81 men and 75 women) was enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum vaspin levels, physical activity by uniaxial accelerometers, peak oxygen uptake, and metabolic risk parameters were evaluated. We also assessed anthropometric and body composition parameters. Results Serum vaspin levels were over the level of 10 ng/ mL in 15 subjects (9.6 %: Vaspin High group). In Vaspin Low group (\5 ng/mL: 74 men and 67 women), serum vaspin levels were 0.12 ± 0.18 ng/mL in men and 0.39 ± 0.70 ng/mL in women. Peak oxygen uptake was significantly and positively correlated with serum vaspin levels even after adjusting for age, physical activity evaluated by R[metabolic equivalents 9 h per week (METsÁh/w)], BMI, and other confounding factors in men. In turn, physical activity was significantly and positively correlated with serum vaspin levels even after adjusting for confounding factors in women. Conclusion Serum vaspin levels were closely associated with physical fitness in men and physical activity in women independent of body composition in this Japanese cohort.

Aim Vaspin is an adipokine separated from visceral fat tissues of obese diabetic rats. This study was to investigate the association between vaspin rs2236242 gene polymorphism and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or obesity in a Chinese population. Materials and Methods T2DM patients and nondiabetic controls were recruited from Qingpu Branch of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University (Shanghai, China) from May 1, 2015 to June 30, 2017. Clinicopathologic characteristics were recorded and their blood samples were collected. Serum vaspin levels were detected by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay and vaspin rs2236242 genotypes by tetra‐amplification refractory mutation system‐polymerase chain reaction. Results Two hundred and ninety‐nine patients with T2DM and 311 controls were recruited at last. The vaspin genotypes of diabetic patients were distinct from nondiabetic controls (χ 2 = 54.611, p < 0.0001). Genotyping revealed that T2DM patients have a greater prevalence of A allele compared with controls (61.9% vs. 42.1%, p < 0.0001). A allele was associated with an increased risk of T2DM (odds ratio = 2.23, 95% confidence interval = 1.773–2.804, p < 0.0001) compared with T allele. The genotype distribution did not differ among nondiabetic subjects with or without obesity. The serum vaspin levels were higher in T2DM patients and obese controls than the nonobese controls, however, the rs2236242 was not found to be significantly related to serum vaspin levels. Conclusions Our findings showed the association between vaspin rs2236242 gene variants with obesity and T2DM in a Chinese population. People with rs2236242 A allele had a 2.23‐fold increased risk of T2DM. These findings suggest that vaspin rs2236242 may serve as a potential diagnostic and/or therapeutic targets for T2DM.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the primary cause of death worldwide. Vaspin was a recently described adipokine, playing a protective role in many metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to assess the relation of serum vaspin levels and vaspin rs2236242 polymorphisms with CAD. The study included 105 healthy subjects and 105 CAD patients. Serum vaspin concentrations and vaspin rs2236242 polymorphisms were determined by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the genotypes of CAD patients (TT 26.7%, TA 71.4%, and AA 1.9%) and controls (TT 70.5%, TA 28.6%, and AA 1%; χ2 = 40.3; df = 2; p = .000). The TA genotype increased the risk of CAD (odds ratio [OR] = 6.60; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.60–12.1; p = .000) as compared to the TT genotype. There was a statistically significant difference between the allelic distribution of CAD patients (T 62.4% and A 37.6%) and controls (T 84.8% and A 15.2%; χ2 = 27.0; df = 1; p = .000). Those carrying the A allele had a higher risk of CAD compared to those with the T allele (OR = 3.35; 95% CI = 2.10–5.36; p = .000). The serum vaspin concentrations of the patients with TT, TA, and AA genotypes were 30.4 ± 1.72, 28.4 ± 2.89, and 36.4 ± 6.38 pg/ml, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the serum vaspin levels and vaspin genotypes (p = .696). All of the above suggested that the vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism was associated with CAD in the Turkish population.
