Serum myoglobin in acute cerebrovascular diseases.

Abstract: Concentration of myoglobin in serum was measured from 114 patients with acute cerebrovascular diseases and compared with serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and aldolase activities. The results obtained were as follows : (1) Elevated activity of myoglobin was observed in various types of stroke as well as CPK and aldolase. (2) The myoglobin level was significantly higher in patients with thalamic hemorrhage than in those with cortical infarction, while no difference was observed in other types of stroke. (3) Th… Show more

“…In addition to echocardiography and other invasive methods revealing centrally mediated myocardial dysfunction, there are few biochemical parameters (markers of myocardial damage) proving this. Today, the rise in serums myoglobin and creatinin phosphokinase -myocardial fraction isoenzyme (CPK-MB) is well confirmed in CNS disorders [6,7]. Stopfkuchen found high serum CPK-MB values in children with isolated head injury [8].…”

“…10 In contrast to the viewpoint that elevated creatine kinase-MB levels represent biological markers for stroke-related myocardial injury, 8 creatine kinase-MB elevations in stroke patients may be noncardiac in origin. 11 Studies 12,13 have found elevated myoglobin levels in patients with all types of acute stroke, however, data regarding the value of the myoglobin level as a prognostic indicator of cardiac complications and the short-term outcomes of acute ischaemic stroke remain limited.…”
