Serum microRNA in patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation

Abstract: MicroRNAs mediate posttranscriptional gene regulation. The aim of the study was to find a microRNA predictor of successful atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. A total of 109 patients undergoing first-time AF ablation were included. Nineteen patients were selected to undergo serum microRNA sequencing (study group). The sequencing data were used to select several microRNAs that correlated with 12month recurrences after AF ablation. Those microRNAs were validated by digital droplet PCR in samples from remaining 90… Show more

“…However, in our TGA-RV cohort, miR-150-5p was only weakly related to worsening HF and failed to be an independent predictor what may be due to the fact that heart failure was not as severe as in the univentricular heart cohort. These findings are in line with two studies in patients with atrial fibrillation indicating miR-150 levels to be lower in patients with persistent than paroxysmal AF thus reflecting more advanced atrial remodeling (40) and miR-183 to be one of the miRNAs that may indicate recurrence of paroxysmal AF in patients after pulmonary vein isolation thus reflecting more subtle changes in atrial remodeling (41). Although TGA-RV patients carry a high atrial arrhythmic burden that was also present in our study cohort, these specific atrial arrhythmias are a different entity compared to atrial fibrillation and usually occur recurrently and a long time before the presence of overt HF.…”

“…A previous study by Kiliszek et al performed small RNA sequencing in peripheral serum samples from AF patients undergoing catheter ablation [ 11 ]. They demonstrated 34 differentially expressed miRNAs in patients with and without AF recurrence.…”

“…However, studies that used an NGS technology to detect circulating microRNAs for AF evaluation are largely limited. A previous study by Kiliszek et al performed small RNA sequencing in peripheral serum samples from AF patients undergoing catheter ablation [11]. They demonstrated 34 differentially expressed miRNAs in patients with and without AF recurrence.…”

“…In another recent study, miR-107 was investigated in AF patients undergoing catheter ablation. Although this miRNA was downregulated in sera from patients with AF recurrence compared to patients without AF recurrence, differences in expression were not significant [ 35 ]. However, the role of miR-107 in cardiovascular diseases is not well documented.…”
