Serum Metabolomic Profiles for Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Grading and Staging by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Detection of metabolic signature for breast cancer (BC) has the potential to improve patient prognosis. This study identified potentially significant metabolites differentiating between breast cancer patients and healthy controls to help in diagnosis, grading, staging and determination of neoadjuvant status. Serum was collected from 152 pre-operative breast cancer (BC) patients and 155 healthy controls in this case-controlled study. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to obtain metabolic prof… Show more

“…Amino sugar metabolism (hexosamine pathway) is also observed to be altered in the IDC tissue (Figure 4 ). These observations are in good agreement with a recent breast cancer metabolomics study by Hadi et al using GC-MS [ 42 ]. N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) is an important component of glycoprotein as it is the first glycan added in the O-glycosylation process, initiation of which aids invasiveness [ 43 ].…”

“…An increase in the concentration of omega-6-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been observed, which are important in modulating various physiological functions including initiation and sustainment of inflammation (Figure 4 ) [ 41 ]. Moreover, the increased fatty acid metabolism has also been reported to be associated with invasive breast cancer [ 42 ].…”

“…Metabolomics is considered as a relatively rapid, accurate and noninvasive method, it is becoming an increasingly popular tool in discovery of diagnostic biomarkers of cancers [ 209 , 210 ]. Many enthusiastic metabolomic markers have been reported for diagnosis and prognosis in lung cancer [ 205 , 208 , 211 ], breast cancer [ 204 , 212 ], pancreatic cancer [ 206 ], Pca [ 213 – 215 ], bladder cancer [ 216 218 ], and epithelial ovarian cancer [ 219 , 220 ].…”

“…Incidence vary from 19.3 per 100,000 women in eastern Africa to 89.7 per 100,000 in western europe [22,23]. Some decrease in the number of death caused by BC is observed mainly due to the improvement in early diagnostics [24]. Nevertheless, routine methods currently used to detect BC usually are not effective, especially in the very early stages [25].…”
