Serum Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 Level is Associated with Fibrosis and Renal Survival in Patients with IgA Nephropathy

Abstract: Background/Aims: In view of the latest findings that matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) acted as a vital marker and pathogenic mediator of renal fibrosis in a murine model, we hypothesized that serum MMP-7 level might serve as a noninvasive prognostic biomarker in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective follow-up study of 244 IgAN patients for a median of 81.9 months. Serum MMP-7 was detected at the time of diagnosis, and renal progression was assessed by Cox proportional hazards… Show more

“…Considering that T score is a well-recognized independent predictor of IgAN, it is worth exploring the possible risk factors associated with T. Studies have reported that tubulointerstitial injury of IgAN was associated with trefoil factor 3 mRNA [15], p38 MAPK activity [16], BMI [17], serum matrix metalloproteinase-7 level [18]. In this study, we demonstrated the signi cance of coagulation parameters PT and APTT in the tubulointerstitial injury of IgAN.…”

“…In contrast to previous reports, the association between serum MMP-7 or serum FGF-23 level and risk for the composite renal outcome was not statistically significant in the adjusting model, although prior reports showed that these biomarkers predict progression of IgAN. 13,14 Though there have been several studies of the biomarkers for predicting the risk for IgAN progression in the last decade, none have compared the performance of these biomarkers. In this study, we have compared the performance of urinary MMP-7 level together with levels of 7 additional previously reported biomarkers for IgAN progression.…”

“…In recent years, efforts have been directed toward the development of biomarkers for early prediction of disease progression in IgAN and have yielded several biomarkers in serum (such as galactose-deficient IgA1 [Gd-IgA1], autoantibodies against Gd-IgA1, fibroblast growth factor 23 , and matrix metalloproteinase 7 [MMP-7]) [11][12][13][14] and urine (such as angiotensinogen [AGT]; epidermal growth factor [EGF]; and kidney injury molecule 1 [KIM-1]). [15][16][17] However, most of these biomarkers were tested in studies with relatively small sample size and have yielded only modest performance in general.…”
