Serum Lipid Profiles, Lipid Ratios and Chronic Kidney Disease in a Chinese Population

Abstract: Aim: To examine the association of serum lipids, lipid ratios with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in a Chinese population. Methods: Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey in China. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 or albuminuria-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) > 30 mg/g. Multivariable logistic regressions and multivariate regression models were used. Serum lipids and lipid ratios included total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein choleste… Show more

“…In accordance with our results, a significant positive correlation of urine ACR was observed with plasma creatinine, and urine microalbumin in a study of Karar et al [12] In a study population, Zhang et al [17], found positive association of ACR with LDL cholesterol and log of LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio in men, in females none of the lipids and lipid related ratios were associated with ACR. Sun et al [18] reported association of ACR with the levels of TGs, HDL cholesterol, Non-HDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio, TGs/HDL cholesterol ratio, and compared to other lipids and their ratios.…”

“…Therefore, using the TG/HDL-C ratio as a surrogate marker of IR has not been widely described in Chinese population. Lipid ratios can also be used to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…TG has been reported to be an alternative surrogate for IR [ 6 ]. Our previous study also indicated that serum TG is a suitable predictor for CKD in men [ 14 ].…”

“…Furthermore, most prior studies investigating the association between CKD and MetS components have been cross-sectional [10,11,12]. In addition, these studies provide results for one or two racial/ethnic groups: Chen et al [13], Hou et al [10], and Zhang et al [11] included only Asians; Kurella et al [9] had a black and white sample. Also, most studies do not encompass the older-age groups: Kurella et al [9] only had middle-aged individuals between the ages of 45 and 64 years, and Kaseda et al [12] only had children between the ages of 1 and 18 years.…”
