Serum Levels of Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-10 as Biomarkers for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Egyptian Patients

Abstract: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) have been reported to be related to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of serum levels of IL-6 and IL-10 as biomarkers for HCC among high-risk patients. Materials and Methods. 80 individuals were enrolled in this study; they were categorized into 4 groups: group 1 healthy individuals (NC) (n = 20), group 2 chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients (n = 20), group 3 cirrhotic patients (LC) (n = 20), and… Show more

“…Indeed, multiple studies have previously reported that the HCC tumor size was positively correlated with serum IL-6 concentration [7,27,28], and our results are concordant with the existing literature. However, the clear and ultimate role of IL-6 in HCC has been controversial.…”

“…Similar significant elevation of serum IL-10 has also been reported in patients with different types of chronic hepatitis C and various stages of cirrhosis (30,31). Level of IL-10 was mostly prominent in patients with severe hepatic lesions and development of HCC, which contributed to immunosuppression by inhibiting antigen presentation, cytokine production, macrophage activation and antigenspecific T-cell proliferation.…”

“…Therefore, serum IL-10 may serve as a predictive marker for HCC progression in HCVpositive patients. It has been suggested that IL-10 level serves as complementary tumour marker and contributes to differential diagnosis of HCC (31). In addition, it is reported that IL-10 is produced vigorously by some tumour cells (32,33).…”

“…The hepatic and renal lymphocytic infiltrations as well as the congested blood vessels. There is a close association between the elevated levels of IL-6 renal (Greenberg et al, 2015)and hepatic (Jin et al, 2006;Othman et al, 2013) injuries. Oxidative stress was an important candidate in promotion of IL-6 production as well as inflammation.…”
