Serum Levels of FSH, LH and Testosterone in Human Males

Abstract: Serum levels of testosterone, LH and FSH were measured by radio•immunoassay in 215 male outpatients aged 15•83 years. Those with endocrine disorders, liver diseases or neo• plasms were excluded. Blood was drawn by venous puncture between 8 and 10 a.m. The results clearly demonstrate, that in males after the age of 50 years, a clear cut decrease of serum testosterone occurs (aged above 60 years: mean value 2.4 ng/ml; aged 20-30 years: mean value 3.5 ng/ml). Serum levels of LH are significantly higher when compa… Show more

“…This more important increase in FSH suggests a decreased production of inhibin by the spermatogenetic cells. Most authors studying plasma gonadotrophin levels observed significant increases in both LH and FSH levels in elderly males (Greenblatt et al, 1976;Rubens et al, 1974;Stearns et al, 1974;Isurugi et al, 1974;Baier, Biro & Weinges, 1974), although Haug et al (1974) did not observe significant age dependent changes in basal serum gonadotrophin levels. These data point towards a primary testicular origin of the decreased androgen secretion.…”

“…However, individuals with the highest endogenous androgens are also the most likely to use AAS. The median age for first time AAS use (18 years of age [148]) correlates with peak serum testosterone levels in men [10]. The incidence of AAS use in young adult men is substantially greater compared to men with lower circulating androgen levels, including prepubertal boys and older men [148].…”

“…Both these patients also had high levels of FSH. It is not unexpected for patients in this age group to have elevated levels of LH and FSH (Baier, Biro and Weinges, 1974;Steams et al, 1974) but it is clear that it is of no prognostic importance with respect to treatment by orchidectomy. These measurements are analagous to Huggins' measurement of testicular weight and it is interesting to note that the three patients of Huggins (1942) who had small testes also had tumours that were undifferentiated.…”
