Serum Leptin and Cholesterol Values in Suicide Attempters

Abstract: The growing number of studies examining the relationship between suicide and lipid metabolism are based upon studies suggesting that cholesterol-lowering procedures may incease the risk of death due to suicide or impulsive-aggressive behavior. Leptin seems to be strongly associated with lipid metabolism. In the present study, serum total cholesterol and leptin levels were compared in 24 suicide attempters and 24 healthy controls. The patients with suicide attempts had significantly lower serum cholesterol and … Show more

“…Comparisons of suicide attempters to well controls have yielded similar results (Gallerani et al, 1995;Alvarez et al, 1999;Sarchiapone et al, 2000;Atmaca et al, 2002b;Kim et al,, 2002;Tripodianakis et al, 2002;Lee and Kim, 2003). Some have found the association between low cholesterol and suicide attempts to be strongest among those with violent suicide attempts or with a history of such attempts (Alvarez et al, 2000;Bocchetta et al, 2001;Atmaca et al, 2003b;Vevera et al, 2003;Kim and Myint, 2004;Marcinko et al, 2005).…”

“…With larger sample sizes, two research groups demonstrated that plasma leptin levels were decreased in patients with major depression independent of body mass status [21,22]. Also, lower levels of leptin in cerebrospinal fluid were found in suicide attempters with depression than those without depression [23,24]. Moreover, decreased levels of leptin in plasma were observed in patients with bipolar disorder [25] and obsessive-compulsive disorder with comorbid major depression [26].…”

“…Leptin is a fat cell-derived hormone signaling to the hypothalamus about food intake, the regulation of weight, and sexual behavior [14] and has been discovered by Zhang et al [21] as the product of the ob gene. A growing number of studies have focused on the leptin levels in the various psychiatric disorders recently [3,4,11]. An interaction between leptinergic and serotonergic systems in central nervous system has been observed [13].…”
