Serum Hepcidin and Ferritin to Iron Ratio in Evaluation of Bacterial Versus Viral Infections in Children

Abstract: If further studies with larger samples confirm these observations, FIR could be used as an inexpensive, rapid and easily performed complementary index for diagnosis of bacterial infections.

“…Previous studies have demonstrated differences in serum iron parameters in children with acute bacterial versus viral infections [18]. We hypothesized that the comparison of hepcidin levels of children convalescing from bacterial and viral infections would not yield significant differences enhancing the role of hepcidin as an acute reactant protein.…”

“…In addition, our study did not control for the time of onset of illness in relation to the time of presentation, which may also have influence the level of both serum iron and serum ferritin. Hepcidin is another molecules involved in iron regulation, and has been studied for its role in the immune response [19,21]. It's potential role as a marker of infection and inflammation could be explored in future studies.…”

“…Additionally they found that the ferritin-to-iron ratio was significantly higher in children who had bacterial infections 1305-7707/14/$27.50 c 2014 -IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved compared with children with viral infections [19]. Ferritin and other markers of iron metabolism have not been studied in the emergency department.…”

“…In addition, the absorption of iron from the diet and the use of iron for erythropoiesis are reduced, the synthesis of haemoglobin is increased, and apolactoferrin is liberated from neutrophils. That regulation of the iron metabolism often leads to anaemia, especially in the case of chronic inflammatory diseases [9,10].…”
