Serum dependence of expression of the transformed phenotype: Experiments with subline of mouse L fibroblasts adapted to growth in serum‐free medium

Abstract: Characteristics of LSF cells grown in serum-containing and serum-free medium were compared. LSF is a subline of the L-strain of mouse transformed fibroblasts adapted to continuous growth is serum-free medium. Proliferation of LSF cells in monolayer on solid substratum was almost similar in serum-containing and in serum-free media. However, several other characters were found to be altered by the addition of serum to the serum-free medium: ability of cells to form colonies in semi-solid medium increased conside… Show more

“…While large areas of close contact are visible, areas of focal contact are also present at cell edges ( Fig. 2a, b), as are microspikes (Bershadsky et al, 1976). Stress fibers are rarely found in these cells.…”

“…1). Spreading of neoplastic cells was found to be reversibly improved by certain alterations of the medium-e.g., by the removal of serum (2,3) or by decrease of Mg2+ concentration (4). Phenotypic normalization of morphologically transformed cells also was induced by several types of chemical compounds added to the media-e.g., by dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (5,6) or retinoids (7,8).…”
