Serum cortisol of Sahel goats following rumenotomy with assorted anaesthetics and sutures

Abstract: The utmost need for pragmatic combination of surgical sutures and local anaesthetic that would evoke minimal post-surgical stress response and allow uncomplicated healing is essential for successful surgeries. Fifteen Sahel goats were randomly allocated into three groups A, B and C to quantitatively assay (ELISA) serum cortisol profiles following rumenotomy, as markers of surgical stress. Diazepam at 0.2 mg/kg was administered intravenously to groups A and B with subsequent lidocaine HCl and bupivacaine invert… Show more

“…Surgical stress response involves stimulation of the sympathoadrenal medullary and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis [ 9 - 13 ]. Their activation causes endocrine and immunomodulatory changes after trauma [ 14 - 17 ]. The degree of physiological response is proportional to the magnitude of injury with increased demands on organ function [ 18 - 22 ].…”

“…The stress response could stimulate the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, which results in an increase in cortisol release. Cortisol level has been found to significantly increase after surgical stimuli in goats [ 39 ], cattle [ 27 ], dogs [ 40 ], and cats [ 41 ]. In this current study, the XNK group displayed a non-significant increase in cortisol level at TInd, TE (0), and ½, 1 h postoperatively, however the XK group significantly increased the cortisol at the same timepoints compared to baseline.…”

“…37 In goats, there was alteration of cortisol after surgery and anesthesia in all groups. 3 Goats are very sensitive to manipulation and anesthesia, animals that do not like routine changes. In thermal stress, they also presented lower cortisol changes for those who underwent exogenous melatonin.…”

“…1 Cortisol levels in goats ranges 14-18ngmL. 2 The type of anesthetic block may also influence the amount of blood cortisol in animals, 3 as well as temperature and estrous in goats, interfering directly with exogenous melatonin. 4 The endocrine response is one of the physiological mechanisms to respond to stress in the temperature levels and is a mechanism of homeostasis defense, increases with body temperature, however melatonin regulates the level of cortisol.…”
