Serum Cardiac Troponin I Concentration in Dogs with Precapillary and Postcapillary Pulmonary Hypertension

Abstract: Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease condition leading to right-sided cardiac hypertrophy and, eventually, right-sided heart failure. Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a circulating biomarker of cardiac damage.Hypothesis: Myocardial damage can occur in dogs with precapillary and postcapillary PH. Animals: One hundred and thirty-three dogs were examined: 26 healthy controls, 42 dogs with mitral valve disease (MVD) without PH, 48 dogs with pulmonary hypertension associated with mitral valve disease (P… Show more

“…Cardiac TnI is elevated in dogs with both precapillary and post-capillary PH and is mildly positively correlated with PAP and with echocardiographic indices of atrioventricular dilation [11]; although, in another study on dogs with pre-capillary PH cardiac TnI did not correlate with PAP [76]. These confl icting results may be attributable to differences in patient population or underlying disease.…”

“…In veterinary medicine, a similar classifi cation system has not been developed, and canine PH is often reported as a primary or secondary condition [9,10] or, according to the haemodynamic pathophysiologic mechanism, as pre-capillary or post-capillary [11].…”

“…PH has been reported in dogs to be associated with respiratory disorders, HWD and CDMD, with incidences ranging from 8% to 50%, 1% to 6%, and 30% to 74%, respectively (Johnson et al 1999;Pyle et al 2004;Kellum and Stepien 2007;Serres et al 2007;Guglielmini et al 2010). CDMD was the most common cause among the three causes of PH in this study.…”
