Serum calcium measurement: Total versus free (ionized) calcium

Abstract: Measurement of serum free (ionized) calcium (Ca(++)) reflects true calcium status of the body in health and disease. Present study evaluates efficacy of Ca(++) over total calcium (CaT) in serum for calcium status. 52 subjects were enrolled for study. Anaerobic fasting blood sample for Ca(++) measurement and autoclaved plain bulb for estimation of CaT, Total protein (TP) and Albumin was used. CaT, Corrected CaT, Ca(++), Calculated Ca(++) were measured and correlated. Corrected CaT and calculated Ca(++) were der… Show more

“…The level of this hormone is increased during follicular development and consequently, require large quantities of calcium ions that withdraw from blood inside the follicular fluid, then raising its calcium concentration (Nandi et al, 2007). The results of the current study are agreed with previous studies in camels (AlFattah et al, 2012), buffalo (Kaur et al,1997), sheep (Nandi et al, 2007) and goats (Sava et al, 2005), while it is incompatible with (Arshad et al, 2005) in sheep.…”

“…Blood serum total calcium was determined according to the method of Lehman and Henry [1984]. Ionized calcium was calculated as described by Sava et al [2005]. Blood serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration were determined according to the instruction of manufacturer of assay kits (Sigma Chemical Co, St Louis, MO, USA) according to Friedewald's formula [Friedewald et al 1972].…”

“…Normal glomerular filtration rates excluded silent kidney disorders [60]. Total urinary calcium in morning urines (n = 26, mmol/l) was tested with Arsenazo III method [61] in the collaborative laboratory (Olympus, photometric Calcium Arsenazo, normal value 1.5 -6 mmol/l).…”
