Background: Recently it has been observed that psoriasis can be successfully controlled by use of vitamin D. This has attracted the curiosity into research on psoriasis and vitamin D as well as role of calcium supplements in the control of psoriasis. Studies have shown that psoriasis risk factor is hypocalcemia. The objective of the study was to analyse serum calcium levels in patients of psoriasis and correlation with severity of psoriasis in comparison with control subjects without psoriasis.Methods: This study recruited 80 subjects, of psoriasis (age and sex control subjects without psoriasis) attending Skin and STD department, Government Medical College Amritsar, Punjab. Both patients and controls studied during period of 2 year from June 2015 to May 2017.Results: Serum calcium levels were significantly lower in psoriasis patients than in controls. Serum calcium levels values in patients of mild severity (PASI <10), moderate severity (PASI: 11-20) and severe (PASI >21) were 9.00±0.20, 8.93±0.24 & 8.98±0.22 respectively.Conclusions: Serum calcium levels were found lower in psoriasis patients and there were no correlation with severity of psoriasis. Hypocalcemia is a risk factor of psoriasis.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic immune- mediated skin disease, with a genetic predisposition. Many factors can trigger or exacerbate psoriasis. Recently, some studies found that psoriasis was associated with hypocalcemia. So we did this study to find this association in our patients. Objective: To evaluate serum calcium level in psoriatic patients and compare it with controls. Methods: This case- control study included 160 subjects (80 patients with psoriasis and 80 controls) admitted to dermatology clinic at Tishreen University Hospital, Latakia, Syria, from 2020- 2021. Serum calcium and serum albumin levels were estimated in all patients. Results: Calcium levels were significantly lower in psoriatic patients than in the control group (mean = 8.98±0.5 in patients vs 9.48±0.5 in controls, p- value<0.001). Calcium levels were significantly lower in patients with severe types of psoriasis (p- value<0.05). There was an inverse correlation between serum calcium levels and PASI score (r =- 0.3, p- value<0.05). There was also an inverse correlation between serum calcium levels and each of age and disease duration. Conclusion: In this study, a low calcium level was observed in psoriatic patients. Hypocalcemia may be a marker for the severity of psoriasis. In addition, Calcium seems to have a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a common dermatological disorder with many risk factors including low calcium levels. The improvement of psoriasis with calcium and Vitamin D3 analogues can implicate a role of calcium levels in triggering or aggravating psoriasis by controlling the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes. The objective is to study the calcium levels in various types of psoriasis and to find any correlation between calcium levels and severity of psoriasis. Cross sectional observational study Serum calcium and albumin levels of all psoriatic patients meeting the inclusion criteria were assessed. PASI score was calculated for patients with psoriasis vulgaris. SPSS software, version 21.0 was used. Chi-square test used for significance of study parameters on categorical scale [significance was assessed at 5% level of significance] and Pearson test was used to find correlation. The study included 206 patients of various forms of psoriasis over the period of 1 year, with males outnumbering females. Hypocalcaemia was found in 18.45% of patients, with significant association of hypocalcaemia in psoriasis vulgaris, pustular psoriasis and erythroderma. A moderately strong negative correlation was found between severity of psoriasis vulgaris and serum calcium levels. Association of hypocalcaemia with severe forms of psoriasis can indicate the role of oral or dietary supplements to correct serum calcium levels to prevent the progression of mild, stable forms of disease to severe forms and thus provide a better outcome.
