Serum calcium and phosphorus measurements in patients with psoriasis: a retrospective review

Abstract: The recent success of vitamin D and its analogues in the treatment of psoriasis has generated extensive research into the role of vitamin D and calcium in this hyperproliferative skin disease. The ohjective of this study was to evaluate calcium and phosphorus levels in patients admitted to our dermatology service for treatment of severe psoriasis. The charts of 15 patients from 21 to 80 years of age were reviewed and admission lahoratory data values recorded. Retrospective analysis of laboratory data from pati… Show more

“…6 Considering role of vitamin in the improvement of condition of psoriasis, certain studies used vitamin D topical application and found that it was useful in the improvement of the skin lesions in patients with psoriasis. 4 Psoriasis has been found to be aggravated with the decrease in the serum calcium levels. This is because the calcium has an important role in the regulation of keratinocytes.…”

“…[9] Moreover, we showed that topical application of 1-25, dihydroxyvitamin D, a well-known calcitropic hormone, improved skin lesions of psoiatic patients. [10] Although vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the level of serum calcium, the main goal of this study was to look for a possible association between hypocalcemia and psoriasis regardless of the level of vitamin D.…”

“…1 Considering the role of calcium and Vitamin D3 in psoriasis, studies have been conducted to check the efficacy of topical Vitamin D3 preparations in improving psoriatic lesions. 2 Hence this study was conducted to study the serum calcium levels in various types of psoriasis and to find a correlation, if any, between the severity of psoriasis vulgaris and serum calcium levels. Very few studies have been carried out to study an association of psoriasis and serum calcium level across the world, till date.…”
