Serum angiopoietin‐2 level as a novel biomarker in atopic dermatitis

Abstract: Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, pruritic inflammatory skin disease.Angiopoietin is an intrinsic mediator induced by T helper 2 cytokines and has been reported it to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AD.Objectives To determine the relationship between circulating angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) in AD patients and to determine its correlation with the severity and chronicity of the disease. Methods The present study included 38 AD patients and 38 healthy controls, age-and sex-matched. We collecte… Show more

“…This was in accordance with Takahashi et al 11 who reported after analyzing patients with psoriasis that there was a significant relation between ANG‐2 serum level and score of PASI ( P = .011) and with Khattab & Said 12 who stated that both disease severity and SCORAD score in atopic dermatitis patients showed a positive significant relation between disease severity and serum Ang‐2 levels ( P = .001). In other words, a higher disease extent might account for a greater change in ANG‐2 as an important mediator in disease pathogenesis and severity.…”

“…Furthermore, Ang‐2 was positively correlated with disease severity in HS patients. In this regard, a positive correlation between serum Ang‐2 levels and disease severity has also been found in other dermatological diseases such as psoriasis 11 and atopic dermatitis 12 . Since the correlation between Ang‐2 and CV disease is well known, the results of our study might indicate that high levels of Ang‐2 could play a role in the CV burden of HS.…”

“…8 Khattab and Said reported that Ang-2 is upregulated in sera of atopic dermatitis patients and positively correlated its levels to disease severity. 9 To our knowledge, the current study was the first to assess Ang-2 serum levels following phototherapy. After treatment, there was a statistically significant decrease in the Ang-2 level in psoriatic patients from (1.13 ± 0.78) before intervention to (0.51 ± 0.22) after intervention (p < 0.001).…”
