Serum and Urinary Uric Acid in Primary Hyperparathyroidism

Abstract: Serum and 24-h urinary uric acid were measured in 29 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism pre- and post-operatively. No significant difference was observed. A positive correlation was found between the ratios of urinary calcium/creatinine and urinary uric acid/creatinine pre-operatively but not after surgery. The serum uric acid level showed an increase from the first to the third day post-operatively and returned to normal within a week, but in patients undergoing other urological operations there was no… Show more

“…While studies using a follow-up time of several months after surgery for HPT have demonstrated a reduction in serum urate levels (Ljunghall and Akerström, 1982;Castrillo et al, 1984;Quang-Yang et al, 1986) due to an increased renal clearence of urate (Ljunghall and Akerström, 1982), serum urate was unaffected during the first postoperative week in this study. This is in accordance with a report (Yamamoto et al, 1987) in which serum urate was found not to be influenced by surgery up to one month postoperatively.…”
