Serum and urinary biochemical markers for knee and hip-osteoarthritis: a systematic review applying the consensus BIPED criteria

Abstract: Specific biochemical markers and categories of biochemical markers as well as their nature, origin and metabolism, need further investigation. International standardization of future investigations should be pursued to obtain more high-quality, homogenous data on the full spectrum of biochemical OA markers.

“…As such these biochemical markers might be of use as diagnostic tool to treat patients more adequately and to monitor disease progression and treatment efficacy more closely. Unfortunately, despite extensive research, at present none of the biochemical markers of joint damage is sufficiently valuable for diagnosis or prognosis of joint diseases at the level of an individual patient 6 .…”

“…The Osteoarthritis Research Society International committee has worked to standardize biomarker investigations by advocating use of the Burden of disease, Investigative, Prognosis, Efficacy of Intervention, Diagnosis (BIPED) criteria [45]-an acronym that represents categories in which biomarkers can be applied to clinical practice. Among the categories, three-diagnosis, burden of disease, and prognosis-are particularly relevant to improving the clinical management of patients with OA.…”

“…High levels of urinary CTX-II are associated with rapidly progressive disease (27,28). Urinary levels of CTX-II have also been reported to be linked to the efficacy of treatment in OA (29). Levels of CTX-II and Helix-II are influenced by body mass index (23,30), but there are conflicting data about the relationship between age and urinary CTX levels (23,30).…”
