Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels in relation to blood pressure in a cross-sectional study in older Chinese men

Abstract: Vitamin D status, parathyroid hormone (PTH) level and their associations with blood pressure in Chinese population are unknown. This study examined these associations in older Chinese men. Blood pressure, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and PTH was measured in 939 community-dwelling Chinese men aged 65 years and older. Linear regression analyses were performed with adjustments for age, body mass index, education, season of measurement, medication use, self-reported history of stroke and Parkinson's disease, … Show more

“…However, in agreement with the present study, two large cross-sectional studies, the Amsterdam Longitudinal Aging Study and the Rancho-Bernardo Study, did not document a significant association (16,17). To the best of our knowledge, there are a handful of studies that have focused on the relationship between vitamin D and hypertension in ethnic Chinese patients (29)(30)(31). In accordance with the present study, Li et There are several potential explanations for the lack of an association between vitamin D and hypertension observed in this study.…”

“…4 In Hong Kong, over 60% of community dwelling Chinese adult have 25(OH)D level below 75 nmol/L. 8,9 In this study, over 90% Chinese renal transplant recipients had insufficient 25(OH)D level. There was no significant difference in the 25(OH)D level between renal transplant patients and healthy controls when stratified according to the stage of CKD.…”

“…It resulted in increased bone resorption and high bone fragility and fracture risk. Recent studies indicated that hyperparathyroidism was linked to the increase of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure [8], and the correlations between serum PTH and blood pressure was approved in another research on Chinese elderly people [9]. The serum PTH of overweight elderly people was higher than those of normal-weight elderly people; therefore the occurrence rate of hypertension was higher in overweight elderly people.…”
