SERS Examination of Saccharin Adsorption on Ni Electrodes

Abstract: The adsorption of saccharin on roughened nickel electrode has been studied with cyclic voltammetry ͑CV͒ and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy as well as complementary discrete Fourier transform calculations. CV measurements reveal a strong influence of both chloride concentration and pH of electrolyte on nickel surface and the inhibitory effect on nickel oxidation by the saccharin addition. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy ͑SERS͒ measurements provide evidence for the strong interaction between the Ni surf… Show more

“…Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful fingerprint spectroscopic technique that can provide structural information about the adsorbed molecules on noble metal nanostructures. However, SERS enhancement is restricted to a few noble metals such as Ag, Au, or Cu which can exhibit high SERS activity due to the electromagnetic and chemical enhancement mechanism. To extend the versatility of the SERS technique, various SERS substrates have been developed.…”

“…The enhancement is known as the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Interestingly, copper is one of the metals that may induce the SERS effect. It's observed by CRM that the deposit from the Cu 2+ -tartrate system has a lower overall copper content than the one obtained from the Cu 2+ -lactate system, and this result fit the waveform of the SPO.…”

“…The greatest inuence on the surface microstructure was exerted by the reduced adsorption of saccharin in the pulsereverse mode. [49][50][51]73 Saccharin is widely used as the brightener in the nickel plating and electrodeposition of NiFe alloys as it inhibits vertical grain growth, leading to smooth and shiny deposits. 74,75 Our scheme of its adsorption in cathodic (DC and PC modes) and alternant cathodic-anodic (PRC mode) current and thus different ways of alloy formation is shown in Fig.…”
