The aim of this study was to examine the resistome characteristics of Salmonella spp. Contamination found in raw retail beef, pork, and chicken samples collected in Hanoi, Vietnam. Approximately 28% (25/90) of samples tested carried Salmonella bacteria. A total of 13/25 (52%) of these Salmonella bacteria were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 9/25 (36%) of the isolates were found to be multidrug resistant. RNA‐seq analysis detected the expression of 107 antibiotic resistance genes (e.g., 22 β‐lactam, 46 aminoglycosides, 8 quinolones, 7 chloramphenicol, 6 tetracycline, and 6 sulfonamide‐trimethoprim resistance genes, and 12 other antimicrobial resistance genes). The parC (S80R and novel mutations A628S) and gyrA (S83F and D87G) mutations contributed to ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella Indiana. The findings illustrate the significant potential for multiple‐antibiotic resistant Salmonella in raw retail meats from Hanoi markets, and also provide abundant data to better understand the multidrug resistant Salmonella resistome. Practical Applications Studying the antibiotic resistance characteristics of Salmonella will provide important information for the prevention, control of diseases as well as food contamination control and regulations on the use of antibiotics in treatment and animal husbandry in order to limit antibiotic resistance of bacteria. Studying the expression genome of Salmonella, especially antibiotic resistance genes in multi‐antibiotic resistant Salmonella isolates, provides insight into the molecular epidemiology of antibiotic resistance genes. More importantly, it is possible to detect new mutations in antibiotic resistance genes that cause antibiotic resistance in Salmonella. In addition, studying the expression genome could help to identify new gene groups that can cause antibiotic resistance in this bacterium.

RESUMEN.-A nivel mundial Salmonella es la responsable de causar millones de casos de gastroenteritis humana y más de cien mil defunciones cada año. Una de las principales fuentes de contagio esta bacteria son los productos de origen aviar. La utilización generalizada de antimicrobianos en la industria avícola ha favorecido el surgimiento de cepas de Salmonella multirresistentes. Dichas cepas podrían transmitirse al ser humano a través del consumo de productos cárnicos contaminados. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar serotipos y patrones de resistencia antimicrobiana de cepas de Salmonella aisladas en una empresa avícola integrada en Ecuador. Al final del período de muestreo se recolectaron 289 muestras que fueron analizadas en base a la norma NTE INEN-ISO 6579 Anexo D. El 20.1% de las muestras fueron positivas a Salmonella, identificándose 4 diferentes serovariedades, siendo S. Infantis (74.1%) el serotipo más frecuente. La mayoría de cepas de Salmonella presentaron resistencia a nitrofurantoína (94.8 %), tetraciclina (82.8%), cloranfenicol (79.3%) y trimetopin-sulfametoxazol (81%). Los resultados de este estudio indican que Salmonella puede estar presente en los diferentes procesos de la industria avícola ecuatoriana, además la resistencia antibacteriana de cepas aisladas en carne de pollo puede representar un riesgo para la salud pública. A major source of this bacteria are poultry products. The widespread use of antibiotics in poultry industry has favored the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of Salmonella. Such strains could be transmitted to humans through consumption of contaminated meat products. The objective of this research was to identify serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Salmonella strains isolated from an integrated poultry company in Ecuador. A total of 289 samples were analyzed with the ISO 6579 Annex D protocol. The results showed 20.1% of positive samples. Four serotypes were found from which S. Infantis (86.2%) was the most frequent serotype. Most Salmonella strains were resistant to nitrofurantoin (94.8 %), tetracycline (82.8%), chloramphenicol (79.3%) and trimetopin-sulfamethoxazole (81%). The results shown in this study indicate that Salmonella may be present in different processes of Ecuador's poultry industry and that antibacterial resistance strains isolated from chicken meat may represent a risk to public health.

Salmonella enterica subsp. salamae serovar sofia (S. sofia) is a prevalent strain of Salmonella in Australian broilers and has been isolated from broiler chickens, litter, dust, as well as pre- and post-processing carcasses, and retail chicken portions but has never been reported in commercial Australian layers or eggs. 2. To investigate whether a S. sofia isolate from a broiler could colonise layers, one-month-old Hyline brown layers were orally inoculated with S. sofia and colonisation was monitored for 2-4 weeks. 3. Overall, 30-40% of the chickens shed S. sofia from the cloaca between 6 and 14 d post-inoculation which then declined to 10% by d 21. Necropsy at 2 weeks post-inoculation revealed 80% of birds harboured S. sofia in the caecum, whilst, by 4 weeks post-infection, no chickens were colonised with S. sofia in the gastrointestinal tract, liver or spleen. Additionally, no aerosol 'bird to bird' transfer was evident. 4. This study demonstrated that laying hens can be colonised by broiler-derived S. sofia; however, this colonisation was transient, reaching a peak at 14 d post-inoculation, and was completely cleared by 28 d post-inoculation. The transience of colonisation of S. sofia in layers could be a factor explaining why S. sofia has never been detected when screening for Salmonella serotypes found in Australian laying hens or eggs.
