Serous papillary adenocarcinoma and adult granulosa cell tumor in the same ovary

Abstract: Surface epithelial-stromal cell tumors are the most common neoplasms of the ovary but occurrence of a serous adenocarcinoma and an adult granulosa cell tumor in the same ovary is an unusual incident. In the present case report we describe this very uncommon occurrence in the ovary of a 50-year-old woman. The patient suffered abdominal distention and was referred to the state hospital where a 5x3 cm multilocular cystic lesion was observed on abdominal CT. Total abdominal hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy … Show more

“…Fibrothecomas usually show inhibin, vimentin and calretinin positivity, but these markers are not specific compared to other sex cord-stromal tumours which may show a similar immunohistochemical profile (8). It is not rare to find bilateral serous carcinomas or bilateral fibrothecomas, but simultaneous occurrence of surface epithelial tumours of the ovary with other types of ovarian tumours is rare (9,10). So far, to the best of our knowledge, this article is the first to report collision tumours, HGSC and fibrothecoma, present in both ovaries at the same time.…”

“…The combination of granulosa cell tumor and mucinous neoplasm has also been reported to arise in a teratoma (7). Additional cases of collision tumors of the ovary include adult granulosa cell tumors associated with serous neoplasms, both benign and malignant (8,9).…”

“…We enjoyed reading the article by Ozbey et al (1) describing the coexistence of serous papillary adenocarcinoma and adult granulosa cell tumour in the same ovary, which was published in your journal last year. Since we have recently met with a similar case of collision tumour of the ovary, we would like to share our experience and discuss some theories respecting the origin of this interesting entity with this very unusual localization.…”

“…Consequently, combinations of several tumour types have been described in the literature, e.g. coexistence of mature cystic teratoma with epithelial mucinous tumours (3, 6, 7), teratoma with granulosa cell tumour (8, 9), serous adenocarcinoma and steroid cell tumour of the ovary (10), papillary mucinous cystadenocarcinoma and endometrial carcinoma (11), and serous papillary carcinoma and adult granulosa cell tumour (1, 12).…”
