Background Backyard swine farming is critical to generating subsistence and food security in rural and peri-urban households in several developing countries. The objective of this systematic review was to analyze the molecular and serological prevalence of influenza A virus (IAV) in backyard swine populations globally. Results We identified 34 full-text research articles in NCBI-PubMed and Google Scholar databases that have reported IAV sero- and/or virological prevalence in backyard swine up to 11 July 2021. The highest number of studies were reported from Asia (n = 11) followed by North America (n = 10), South America (n = 6), Africa (n = 6), and Europe (n = 1). While the maximum number of studies (44.12%) reported human-to-swine transmission of IAV, swine-to-human (5.88%), poultry-to-swine (5.88%), and wild birds-to-swine (2.94%) transmissions were also reported. An overall higher IAV seroprevalence (18.28%) in backyard swine was detected compared to the virological prevalence (1.32%). The human-origin pandemic A(H1N1)pdm09 virus clade 1A.3.3.2 was the more frequently detected IAV subtype in virological studies (27.27%) than serological studies (18.92%). In addition, the avian-origin highly pathogenic H5N1 and H5N8 viruses were also detected, which further substantiated the evidence of avian–swine interactions in the backyards. Conclusion Human–swine and avian–swine interactions in backyards may transmit IAV between species. Monitoring the circulation and evolution of IAV in backyard swine would help stakeholders make informed decisions to ensure sustainable backyard swine farming and public safety.

The antibody response of domestic pigs to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) was investigated in commercial farms at various regions of Thailand during the year 2018-2021. A total 2,002 serum samples were collected from 16 farms located in 10 provinces and tested by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Among total serum samples, 914 samples were further tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect ORF2 gene. The results revealed that 81.17% of pigs had low positive level antibody against PCV2, while 10.29% had high positive titer. On the other hand 8.54% of pig had no antibody to PCV2. The low positive antibody level was found in most population in all farm sizes as well as all types of pig as in age categories. The PCR result illustrated that there was no viral gene in seronegative serum. While 0.8% of total low positive serum samples displayed positive by PCR. In addition, 3.23% of total high positive serum samples showed positive by PCR. The present study is the first nationwide serological prevalence of PCV2 antibody report since two decades of PCV2 vaccines was applied in Thailand. The results proved that high prevalence of PCV2 immunity was established, with the most population had antibody titer fall in low positive, while some of viremic pigs still presented, determined that the routine vaccination programs used in farms can control PCV2 efficiently since continuing vaccination.

Purpose of research: To study the spread of ascariosis and esophagostomosis of pigs in industrial pig breeding and in farms of various types in Central Yakutia. Materials and methods: The study of the species composition of pathogens and the spread of intestinal nematodes was carried out in 2001-2004. In industrial pig farm and subsidiary plots pigs were tested for infection helminthological diseases. For this, a saturated solution of sodium chloride was prepared (400-420 g of sodium chloride per 1 L of boiling water. 3 g of faeces were weighed according to a sample, which were placed in a glass with a capacity of 50 ml, were poured with a small amount of a saturated solution of sodium chloride and stirred. 3 drops were removed from the film surface with a metal loop, transferred to a glass slide and examined under a microscope with low magnification. A total of 1236 samples of pig feces were examined, including 262 young animals from 2 to 4 months and 974 adult pigs. Results and discussion: The pigs of Yakutia are parasitized by 2 types of nematodes: Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum dentatum.
