Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections in goats from two Argentinean provinces

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in goats from two Argentinean provinces raised under different management conditions. A total of 2922 serum samples from adult goats of Córdoba (n=2187) and Buenos Aires provinces (n= 735), Argentina, were assayed by indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT, cut-off 1:100) for antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum. Seroprevalence was 40.8% (CI 39.0%-42.6%) and 5.5% (CI 4.7%-6.4%) for T. gondii and N. caninum, re… Show more

“…Recorded data showed that intermediate hosts of T. gondii and N. caninum become infected in two ways of vertical (transplacental) and horizontal (ingestion of oocysts shed in milk and meat) (Belluco et al, 2017;Boas et al, 2015;Donahoe et al, 2015;Dubey, 2003;Hussain et al, 2017;Jones & Dubey, 2012;Klauck et al, 2016;McCann et al, 2008;Oshiro et al, 2015). Thus, contaminated milk and dairy products (particularly traditional dairy products) play an imperative role in the distribution of T. gondii and N. caninum infections to human (Ayinmode, Akinseye, Schares, & Cadmus, 2017;Gos et al, 2017).…”

“…Humans are mainly infected with T. gondii by ingesting uncooked meat and water contaminated by oocysts from the environment, or by vertical transmission [2,3,7]. In addition, T. gondii can also have a negative influence on animal growth, development and reproduction, and cause great economic loss to livestock husbandry [6]. Livestock become infected mainly by ingesting food and water contaminated with sporulated oocysts [12].…”
