Seroprevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 in blood donors from the regional hospital of Valdivia, Chile

Abstract: It is estimated that 15-20 millions of people are infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus 1/2 (HTLV-1/2) worldwide, and 20-30% of them are Latin Americans. The seroprevalence rates vary according to geographic area, socio-demographic composition and individual risk behaviors. The impact of HTLV-1-associated diseases on the community, as well as the increasing concerns about blood transfusion safety due to infectious transmitted agents, has required mandatory screening assays of blood donors as an effecti… Show more

“…Furthermore, in Europe and Japan, most HTLV‐infected donors are HTLV‐1 positive, whereas in the United States a higher prevalence of HTLV‐2 positivity is reported . Interestingly, a reduction of HTLV seroprevalence was reported in some regions of the Americas: it decreased from 0.0093% in 1990 to 0.0011% in 2010 in Canada, from 0.73% in 1991 to 0.24% in 2010 in Chile, and from 0.6% in 1995 to 2000 to 0.1% in 2002 to 2008 in the Minas Gerais Region (Brazil)…”

“…Rates of 5–6% infection were found among blood donors of highly endemic areas, such as the Caribbean Islands and Japan [290292]. In medium prevalence areas of South America, these rates are close to 2% [293299]. Systematic screening for HTLV-1 in blood banks has become compulsory in many countries.…”

“…Screening tests are usually enzyme-linked immunoassorbent assays (ELISAs) (3,5,18,43,66) or particle agglutination (PA) (33). Confirmatory tests are immunofluorescence (IF) (23) but mostly Western blot (WB) analyses (30,35,38,39,64,71).…”
