Seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus infection in individuals with clinical evidence of hepatitis in Goiânia, Goiás: detection of viral DNA and determination of subtypes

Abstract: SUMMARYThe presence of serological markers for hepatitis B virus (HBsAg, anti-HBc IgM and Anti-HBc total) was investigated in the serum of 1,396 individuals who had clinical suspect of hepatitis. It was observed that 50.7% of the individuals were positive and, from the total of the studied individuals, 14.5% were positive for HBsAg. From these, 8.5% were also positive for anti-HBc IgM. The analysis in relation to gender showed a higher seroprevalence index among male individuals (p < 0.0001). It was observed t… Show more

“…Subtypes adw4 and ayw2 were observed in 3% of the population studied. Similar results were observed in 51 HBsAg-positive patients treated in the public health system of the same city, where 62.7% were subtype adw2, 23.5% ayw3, 9.8% ayw2 and 3.9% adw4 (25) . In another Brazilian study performed with miners exposed to malaria who worked in the Amazon region, 59% of subtype adw2, 8.1% adw4 and adw3 and 5.4% ayw2 (27) were found.…”

“…In all HBsAg positive samples, extraction and amplification of HBV-DNA were carried out by nested PCR. Samples with positive PCR result were further submitted to another PCR reaction covering a fragment of 417 base pairs of the S gene as developed by SITNIK et al (25) .…”

“…However, study shows that even in intermittent viremia the viral DNA can be detected when ultrasensitive nucleic acid amplification testing (3.8 IU/mL) is utilized 7 . On the other hand, in Goiânia, Goiás, 3.6% of positive rate for viral DNA in this type of sample was observed utilizing the same procedure 14 . This difference may be the result of the type of population studied since in this study the participants were patients with clinic suspect of hepatitis.…”
