Seroprevalence of canine herpesvirus in breeding kennels in the Gauteng Province of South Africa

Abstract: Canine herpesvirus (CHV-1) causes neonatal deaths as well as infertility due to embryonal death, abortion and stillbirths in breeding kennels. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against canine herpesvirus in the serum of dogs older than 1 year in breeding kennels in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. A serum neutralization test (SNT) and a newly developed enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to test the serum samples of 328 dogs in 38 breeding kennels. With SN… Show more

“…CHV was first described in 1965 as a pathogen responsible for a fatal generalized hemorrhagic disease of newborn pups (5). The host range of CHV is generally restricted to domestic and wild Canidae (11), and the worldwide distribution of CHV infection in domestic dog populations has been shown by virus isolation (2,7,10,12,24,27) and seroepidemiological studies (6,25,28,30,31,34). It is now well recognized that the pathogenic potential of CHV is mostly influenced by the age of the host (11).…”

“…Almost the same set had previously been used for determining the seroprevalence of canine herpesvirus 1 in Gauteng Province (29). In that study, canine herpesvirus 1-positive dogs were found in 45% of the kennels and the prevalence of seropositive dogs in affected kennels was close to 40%.…”

“…The sera were taken from patients presented for various conditions unrelated to PV infections. The second set containing 315 sera was originally collected at three different veterinary practices in Gauteng Province, South Africa, between May and June 2005 in order to determine the prevalence of antibodies against canine herpesvirus in the serum of dogs older than 1 year in breeding kennels (29). Between 3 and 20 samples from different dogs were available from each of 36 kennels.…”

“…The involvement of herpesvirus in naturally occurring infertility and pregnancy losses [20] in the bitch is controversial; however, there is more and more evidence regarding the implication of this agent in cases of infertility [21][22][23][24]. The virus has been associated with reproductive failure if the dam is infected or reactivates during either estrus or the pregnancy.…”

“…Canine herpesvirus type 1 occurs in canine populations throughout the world, with serological studies demonstrating an incidence of up to 60-80% depending on the country [22,24,[41][42][43][44]. This incidence is probably underestimated, as serological testing only detects animals either recently infected or having reactivated the virus.…”
