Seroprevalence and serum profile of cytomegalovirus infection among patients with hematologic disorders in Bahia State, Brazil

Abstract: Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus with from 30% to 100% of the general population exhibiting prior exposure by serology. This cross-sectional study evaluated the serological profile of anti-CMV antibodies and two acute-phase reaction proteins in Haematologic Disorder Patients (HDPs) from Bahia State, Brazil. Immuno-chemiluminescence assays were performed to detect anti-CMV IgM and IgG antibodies. Serological levels of High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (CRPH) and Alpha-1-Acid Glycoprotei… Show more

“…Another study carried out in Salvador city from 2008 to 2010 suggested that there is no significant difference between the sexes with regard to prevalence of cytomegalovirus infections among patients with hematologic disorders. The study reported a significant association in patients aged >58 years 13 .…”

“…There was significant difference (X2= 1.412, p-value=0.000) in the level of anti-CMV IgM and anti-CMV IgG antibodies among the two groups ( Table 2). The CD4 cell counts ranged from 17 -321 cells/ mm 3 . There was significant association (X2= 1.155, p-value=0.0000) between CD4 cells count and seropositivity outcome of HIV-1 seropositive patients tested for anti-CMV IgM and anti-CMV IgG antibodies (Table 2).…”

“…CMV is also a ubiquitous agent that can cause infection during the course of life at any time [34], [35] . By serology, 30-100% of the general population exhibit prior exposure to the virus [36] . CMV remains latent in the infected host throughout life and rarely reactivates to cause clinical illness except in immunocompromised individuals [37]- [41] .…”
