Serological Identification of the New Cold Agglutinin Specificity Anti-Gd

Abstract: The specificity anti-Gd of human cold autoagglutinins is characterized using untreated and enzyme-treated human red blood cells. Gd determinants of human RBC are resistant to proteases, but are inactivated by neuraminidase (RDE). In contrast, I/i determinants are not inactivated by proteases or RDE, while Pr(1-3) determinants are inactivated by proteases and RDE, and Pr(a) determinants are resistant to RDE, but are inactivated by proteases.

“…Anti-FI was previously reported in 3 cases [17][18][19], In two of these cases, anti-FI occurred together with anti-I; both cases were included in the present study [18, case 4; 19, case 3]. Anti-Gd was previously described in 4 cases [20][21][22]; coexisting anti-Gd and anti-I had not been reported before. From the results of our study, it must be con cluded that the combined occurrence of anti-Fl/Gd and anti-I CA is a quite frequent event, which had been overlooked because the serologic methods necessary to detect these specificities had not been routinely applied.…”

“…They recognize N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc)-determined protease-resistant, glycolipid-dependent Gd antigens [1]. They are in hibited by sialyllactose [2], The isomer NeuAca2-3Galßl-4Glc has been shown to be responsible for inhibition [3].…”
